Assessment
The ZP Schools in the Maharashtra district face heavy load shedding due to which the school facilities are severely interrupted, and e-learning is not possible. This also leads to issued with filtration of water for access to safe drinking water. A survey was conducted of 18 schools before 10 were identified for an Integrated School Development Program. A variety of initiatives aimed at addressing these problems, required a detailed assessment of the problems themselves. Firstly, power cuts and load shedding were significant. Water was available in each school, but the quality of drinking water is different due to water being drawn from different sources. No or limited electrical equipment was installed in the classrooms. Secondly, there was no proper system for safe drinking water in many schools. The pH of drinking water should be between 5.5 – 9.5. We found that the water of many schools was turbid as it had been drawn from a polluted lake or well, making it unsafe for drinking purposes.
Intervention
With the support of our donor, we intervened by installing a complete solar electrification system in all 10 schools using a 1-2KW Solar PV Hybrid System. A .5KW Solar Water Filter with a storage and distribution system provided clean and pure drinking water in 5 schools.
Impact
Solar electrification of the school ensures there is potential for engaged teaching in a comfortable environment. Without need to plan for the uncertainties of power cuts, the faculty is able to plan for their educational systems. The total installed capacity in 10 ZP schools is 16.5 KW. With assumptions that all schools will run the system properly in a year, then they can generate approximately 24,000 units a year. This will further lead to reducing 24 tons of CO2 emission per year, which can create an environmental impact each year on the school premises. Solar enabled water filters can maintain the pH in the water while keeping the minerals intact in the water. In all five schools daily, 500 liters of safe drinking water is available for the students through a solar water filtration system. This system will filter, clean, and provide potable water to the school children, which can lead to an improvement in the student’s health.
