270 million
As urban areas race ahead in development and progress, the forgotten Bharat of India is perishing in its own lack. Their homes are dark come sunset with little or no access to electricity.
They walk for hours each day to collect water for their basic needs. They drink turbid water, sharing their source with cattle.
At Project Chirag we wanted to create a sustainable model of development, one that allowed for villagers to maintain and nurture their own progress. And for this we pivot our development on the most viable, affordable and continuous source of energy. The Sun.
The Impact Is Real
Reduced Carbon Emissions
Kerosene and wood are the greatest sources of light for villagers, and using solar lights instead reduces the environmental and health hazard.
Positive Health Indicators
Clean water prevents water borne diseases, while subsistence farming combats malnutrition.
Improved Hygiene
Access to water ensures sanitation facilities can become usable, moving towards ODF.
Increased Productive Hours
Time spent walking for water and in darkness are now spent in schools and on fields.
Reduced School Dropouts
Kerosene and wood are the greatest sources of light for villagers, and using solar lights instead reduces the environmental and health hazard.
Empowered Women
Now able to complete chores after dark, and with no need to spend a large part of their day collecting water, the women engage in income generating activities.
Year-round Livelihood
Lift irrigation makes way for multi-cropping, ensuring farmers are no longer dependent on the rains, and are able to cultivate for consumption and sale, perennially.
